PWA | SYLT – Day 6 and 7

PWA Sylt 2010 Day 6 and 7
Yesterday and today started of sunny, but no wind at all. For these days the slalom racing had a high priority and suppose to be the first discipline to run.Though yesterday the freestylers were having a chance for tow-in-windsurfing, unfortunately for me the news came to late so couldn’t register.

Team mate Ricardo Campello V 111 still managed sneaking in the competition and performing some really fast and high rotation like Airfunnels and Burners. Actually he was taking quite a big risk hooking in the bar instead of holding it like everybody else did. One time it almost went wrong because he couldn’t hook out on time, before flying on the dam. My friend and travel budy Steven van Broeckhoven from Belgium, showed the best performance and won the super session!

Top 3 winners from the tow-in-windsurfing super session:
1. Steven van Broeckhoven B 72
2. Golitto Estredo V 01
3. Taty Frans NB 9

PWA | SYLT – Day 5

PWA Sylt 2010 Day 5
Today there was some Slalom sailing in the cold but sunny morning, unfortunately for the slalom guys the wind was dropping fast so they only could sail a few rounds. Later this day the wind didn’t came back and everybody was on standby the whole day. Tomorrow the forecast isn’t looking to promissing and there might be a chance that slalom sailing will start of around 10:30.

PWA | SYLT – Day 3

PWA Sylt 2010 Day 3
Skippersmeeting was plant at 10AM. When arriving at the worldcup location it was already “raining cats and dogs”. After rigging and bringing all my gear to the beach it was a matter of a waiting. But minutes later new weather updates showed that the wind would might come late midday from NE direction. This means offshore and really gusty winds. Finally at 17:00 the PWA decided to give it a try and started of with the first round. During the first rounds the wind was shifting from directions all the time When warming-up I was sailing with my biggest gear 5,7 Neilpryde Firefly and My JP Ausltralia Freestyle 107. With just a couple of other riders I was one of the only one who could get into planning speed. When the first heat was sailed from 2nd round the organisation decided putting the competition on hold. One hour of waiting the PWA eventually decided to cancel the competition for this today. If tomorrow will be windy I have to sail in heat nr. 12 which means I am in the 2nd heat. If not there might be some slalom sailing, during the day.

PWA | SYLT – Day 2

PWA Sylt 2010 Day 2
Skippers meeting for Freestyle took place at 9AM in the morning. When arriving there was some wind left but definitely not enough wind to start of with the first heats. Having seen the elimination ladder, there have been added some new big names in the Freestyle competition. 3x times Freestyle Worldcampion Ricardo Campello V 111, who’s only competing in waves these days decided to register too. So did Kauli Seadi BRA 253 2x vice Freestyle World Champion and 3x Wave World Champion.

In the whole elimination here there seems to be no easy heats. Again a strong field as there was in previous World cup events. Right now the level of Freestyle is extremly high and so is the level of almost all riders. There are actually no easy heats and you have to give it all in each and every heat. The conditions in Sylt can variate but mostly wavy, which makes Freestyle really exciting.Having waves on the outside makes it exciting for nice jumps such as high airchachoo’s, shaka’s and double loops. Going in perfect for the newest power moves. For this day the wind didn’t get sufficiënt enough even for starting of with the Slalom, which can be hold in minor windconditions. Tough there where quit a lot of good waves for surfing and Supping (stand up paddle –surfing). This all together made today quit a nice day to prepare and enjoy the atmosphere of Sylt.

PWA | SYLT – Day 1

PWA Sylt 2010 Day 1
The PWA Grandslam Sylt is the Final and 4th. Freestyle event for 2010. Grand slam, means that there will be competed in three disciplines: Wave, Freestyle and Slalom. According to giving weather conditions the race crew will decide which discipline will be run. After I’ve had slept for hardly two hours registration took place at 11AM here in Sylt. When arriving at registration there was already a big line. Almost all topriders from all disciplines (Slalom, Freestyle and Wave –Men/ Women) had to register too. After registering it was time for some autographs photos and putting all event stickers in the sails. At 4pm the yearly big opening ceremony started, on the big boulevard of Sylt. This was mainly about introducing riders from each country to the crowds. As for today I decided going to bed very early as I really had to catch up with a lot of sleep.

PWA | FUERTE – Interview

Interview by Funsporting
Man muss ja leider realistisch bleiben…

PWA | FUERTE – Summary

PWA Fuerteventura 2010 Summary
Yesterday we’ve had the closing ceremony from the PWA Fuerteventura freestyle World Cup. Again Fuerteventura was providing us with very windy conditions for almost the entire week. Thumbs up for the organizers who did a great making this event possible. The competition; for me this was a big disappointment and I definitely wasn’t performing my best during a number of reasons. Before the start of the competition I was already not in my best physical shape. Facing a strong flue before the event kicked off. The first two days of the competition went quite okay, getting kicked out the first round field terrible.

As always I was really keen working my way up in the elimination ladder during this contest. During the start of the second double elimination I had to sail against Italian pro rider Mattia Pedrani I-00.During this particular heat I over rotated my ponsch and hit my big toe again really hard. Mattia was sailing a very solid het and won the heat. Having a bad ranking in this Worldcup has big consequence for my overall ranking. Now dropped from the 5th. place to the 14th. place in the overall ranking. The good news: yesterday I’ve had taken an X-ray photo to make sure nothing was really broken. Fortunately no fractures! Big relief! Now I hope I’ll be back on the water in a couple of days. Learned a lot over here and got some more experience in the pocket for next years Worldcups in Fuerteventura. Now it’s time to focus for the upcoming PWA Worldcup in Sylt! Big congratulations to my friend Steven van Broeckhoven B-72 who became 3rd. after sailing really strong yesterday. Also Big congrats to Jose “Gollito” Estredo V-01 winning his fourth Overall title in Freestyle.
